We drove from Dallas through Mexico on our first road trip back in 1993 exploring locations to producer travel reports for WFAA TV in Dallas. After stopping in several beach and mountain communities, we stopped in San Miguel de Allende and we immediately loved it.
Over the years, we found ourselves traveling through Mexico more and more as part of my job producing travel reports for Texas TV stations, CNN, The Travel Channel, National Geographic and other networks. More than 30 years later dozens of trips back to SMA later, we now live there full time. Since living here, we've had many friends and acquaintances ask us about what it's like to live in San Miguel. Often we've been asked about the process of moving down, how we like it, how our life has changed, how fun it is, how affordable it is, how safe it is, on and on. That's how we decided to start our own "relocation" tours because the only way to get a touch of living here is to see and experience it for yourself.
We've seen San Miguel over the years grow but it's always retained a charm not seen in any other place we've been to. The weather is pleasant mostly year round, affordable healthcare, housing and living is still attainable. You can either live in luxury or find many affordable options. The same goes for daily cost of living like groceries expenses, eating out and entertainment. The lifestyle you prefer whether it's high end or affordable is up to you!
San Miguel is often referred to as a "soft landing" location since English is widely spoken here. There's a large number of foreigners that have made San Miguel their permanent home, but that doesn't mean the town is overrun by them. Overall there's housing for luxury, mid-range and economic budgets. A couple can live on $2000 a month, $4000 a month or $10k+ a month. It's up to you to decide what lifestyle fits your needs the best.
